Generation Info

Labradoodles can be very different depending on the type, resulting from the parents and grandparents. It is very important to understand the type and pedigree of your Labradoodle!

We breed F1b Labradoodles. Also called Second Generation. To get an F1b puppy you must breed an F1, First Generation, back to the Poodle. The F1 is the result of a Poodle to  Pure Labrador Retriever.

F1b results when you breed an F1 Labradoodle back to a Standard Poodle. F1 means First Generation. (Labrador Retriever to a Standard Poodle; 50% Lab, 50% Standard Poodle). These are First Generation because it is the first breeding that results in a Labradoodle. F1b means First Generation BRED BACK or Back Cross to a Standard Poodle. (F1 Labradoodle to a Standard Poodle; 25% Lab, 75% Standard Poodle). These are the Second Generation because it is the second step in breeding to get a more poodle-like Labradoodle.

Most people prefer a curly or wavy coat over the F1's sometimes shaggy and wiry coat so we breed our Standard Poodles to our F1 Labradoodles to “correct the coat”. The F1b Generation can favor more of a Poodle type coat with the wavy/curly fleece and sometimes wool coats but still retains the unique Labradoodle look.

Many F1b’s have thick, soft hair that is wavy to curly. They're often frosted or highlighted in color, even turning blonde or silver. See our Doodle Coats & Colors page. Their size often varies between 55 and 65 lbs. They shed less than any other generation and are the closest it comes to being a “hypoallergenic” dog.

They're highly intelligent and friendly and often used as seeing-eye dogs and service dogs because of their incredible intelligence and their size and strength. F1b’s are the most sought after generation.

The F1B generation is still close enough in the breeding tree to benefit from *Hybrid Vigour.  With each successive generation vigour is lost.

Coat Maintenance: moderate to high care Coat Description: Coat continues to grow in length and requires combing and occasional grooming. It is usually thicker and curlier than a first generation Labradoodle with a wavy or curly coat. Shedding: very light to no shed  Allergy Friendliness: Backcross Labradoodles are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. *Hybrid Vigour (Heterosis) or outbreeding enhancement, describes the increased strength of different characteristics in hybrids; the possibility to obtain a genetically superior individual by combining the virtues of its parents. Heterosis is the opposite of inbreeding depression, which occurs with increasing homozygosity. The term often causes controversy, particularly in terms of the selective breeding of domestic animals, because it is sometimes believed that all crossbred plants or animals are genetically superior to their parents; this is true only in certain circumstances: when a hybrid is seen to be superior to its parents, this is known as hybrid vigor. When the opposite happens, and a hybrid inherits traits from their parents that makes them unfit for survival, the result is referred to as outbreeding depression.
